It was actually someone here on Reddit, about 8 years ago, who I first saw talk about using multiple smart playlists as a type of gauntlet, and after I read it, I decided to devote the time. I can't lie the initial set-up does take quite a bit of effort, as most people usually don't bother going through and rating songs they like, let alone songs they don't. And iTunes rarely has any kind of negative performance impact on my computer, which is saying a lot, because every time I sync my phone, all those playlists are being updated with recent plays and skips. I love it as it completely got rid of that whole "hearing the same songs over again while skipping 90% of the rest" thing. And, finally, if they're at 1 star and hit the skip threshold, they'll be removed from the playlist system altogether. Conversely, if they hit enough skips, they'll then be downgraded, etc. When they do get upgraded, their play and skip count is then reset, starting them off fresh to then reach a new threshold for the next rating. And if a song reaches a determined about of plays with 0 skips, it'll get "upgraded" to the next star rating if it has 1 skip, it will then take a couple more plays to be upgraded, and so on. And they all work on a spectrum between that as their ratings go up, their play count goes up, their skip count decreases or stays the same, etc. Whereas a five-star-rated song, with over 200 plays, will show up in the final playlist if it hasn't been played in the last week. If it's a song I listen to a lot, and highly rated, there's a higher chance it'll get on the final playlist, whereas if it's a lower rated song that gets skipped a lot, chances are it'll only wind up on the playlist on rare occasions (and if it has the lowest possible rating, and eventually reaches a preset number of skips, I'll remove it from this gauntlet altogether).Ī one-star-rated song, for example, will only show up in the final playlist if, and only if, it hasn't been played in the last 50 days, and not skipped in the last 100 days. I use over 85 of them (all working together) to comb through 5,000 songs in my library to spit out a final playlist of songs based on their ratings, how often I listen to them, how often I skip them, how long it's been since I listened, and more. There is no rule against reposting, but mods may tag posts as "frequent repost" or even remove it if it has just been posted. A collection of items you have or 'found' is fine.
